“What will we do?” asks Mary. “Dunno” replies Louise. The other young young ladies sitting around in the staff lunchroom just shrug their shoulders. Eventually Emma pipes up “Hey – let’s go check out the new shopping centre!”  That’s leadership!

It’s a tense Under 9 footy match. It’s half-time and the other team’s getting ahead.  “It’s useless!” bleats Rory. “They’re all bigger than us!” adds Blake.  The coach eventually chimes in “You guys are going terrible. I’m ashamed of the way you’re playing out there”.  There is an awkward silence until little Jeremy speaks up: “I know it’s hard going - but fellas - we can do it! They’re bigger than us, but we score out wide on the wings!  Come on - let’s get out there - all we need is one more goal!”  That’s leadership!

There are three types of people in the world.

  • people who make things happen
  • people who let things happen
  • people who ask “What’s happening?”

Leaders are people who make things happen.

Whatever situation you find yourself in, you can be a leader every time you make things happen. You can show leadership at work; you can show leadership in your family; you can show leadership in an organisation or team every time you make things happen.

Three Steps to a Leadership Makeover

Here are three simple steps that will help you become a person who will make things happen.

1.    Make a promise

Simply make a promise - and keep it. That’s making things happen.  That’s leadership.

You can make the promise to yourself. “I will get up at 6 o’clock tomorrow morning”. And when the alarm rings, you get straight out of bed. Not because you HAVE to. You get out of bed because you made a promise - you’re a leader - and you want to make things happen.

Make a promise today - and keep it. It’s the first step to becoming a leader.

2.    Make a plan

If you want to be a leader, make a plan - and stick to it.  Your plan might be to lose weight, or paint the house, or finish reading a book, or study for an hour every day.  Write down your goal, then write down your plan to achieve that goal. Every time you stick to your plan - you are making things happen - you are a leader!

3.    Make a difference

Every time you make a difference to someone else’s life - every time you do a favour that is unexpected - every time you surprise someone with a gift - every time you put in that extra effort for someone else - that’s making things happen - that’s leadership.

And when you start making a difference to someone else’s life - then you earn the right to be listened to - you earn the right to be a leader!

This world doesn’t need more people who simply have a badge which says “leader”. We need people who will make things happen!  You can be a leader - every moment of every day - every time you make things happen - every time you make a difference!
